MARK YOUR CALENDARS! In response to the overwhelming success of our inaugural Judicial Educational Conference in Palo Alto earlier this year, the Educational Committee of the Alliance of California Judges is pleased to announce two upcoming educational events for your consideration.
For those whose current or prospective bench assignment is criminal law, the Alliance is pleased to sponsor a highly focused educational conference covering many important and topical matters involving criminal law. These include two lectures on Crawford by Judge Lew Davis; lectures on realignment and parole revocation/warrant processing by Judge Gregg Prickett; lectures on bail issues and a panel discussion on bail led by Judges Steve White and Kent Hamlin; plus felony sentencing highlights and current search issues – blood draws, emails, texts, cell towers and black boxes – led by other distinguished colleagues. Due to space limitations, the conference will be limited to 55 judges and their guests. While all bench officers are welcome, priority will be given to Alliance members. The conference venue is the Dana Point Marina Inn, located in the heart of beautiful Dana Point Harbor in Orange County, which has undergone recent room renovations. Our reduced conference room rate for poolside rooms, either king or two queens, is $85 per night. Our reduced room rate for harbor view rooms, either king or two queens, is $110 per night. The conference begins Friday evening, September 13, with a welcome reception and dinner for conference participants and guests. Lectures, panels and presentations begin after continental breakfast on Saturday morning at 8:00 AM, concluding at 3:00 PM. Following a continental breakfast on Sunday morning, our education resumes at 8:00 AM. The conference concludes at 12:00 PM. For some fun in the sun we have reserved the historic 82’ schooner, the Curlew, for a scenic 2-hour cruise of the Southern California coastline from 3:30 – 5:30 on Saturday afternoon. Cost is $25 per person. Space is limited is to 26 boaters. You can check out the vessel at www.sailcurlew.com. For those who prefer to stay on dry land, Dana Point Harbor is a 3,000 slip marina, chock full of small shops along the waterfront. Our conference venue is a few miles from the art colony of Laguna Beach and the Mission (the “Jewel of the Missions”) in San Juan Capistrano, constructed in 1776. Our evening on Saturday includes a gala reception and dinner for conference participants and their guests. We are pleased to announce that our keynote address will be delivered by Chapman School of Law – and former congressman – Dean Tom Campbell. Exclusive of hotel rooms for two nights and the optional cruise, costs for the conference, which includes all educational materials, continental breakfasts, evening receptions, dinners and Saturday lunch is $150. Guests are welcome to attend either or both receptions and dinners at a cost of $75 per event.
Spring 2014 Civil Law Conference – March 16 – 18, 2014 – Laguna Cliffs Resort & Spa Once again we are delighted to partner with our generous host, the George Mason School of Law, in announcing our second annual judicial education conference, which will be held at the Marriott Laguna Cliffs Resort & Spa from March 16 – 18, 2014. The conference will cover a multitude of timely and interesting topics on both days, with a focus on the economics of access to civil justice – Consumer Law, Mass Torts, and Class Actions – on Day One and Trial Court Funding, Branch Management and Legislative Issues on Day Two. As with our inaugural event in Palo Alto, you can count on informative and interesting presentations that you will find both educational and enjoyable! This year, the conference begins Sunday evening, March 16, with a welcome reception on the hotel’s ocean view terrace, followed by dinner for conference participants and guests. Our speaker will be FTC Commissioner and Professor of Law, Josh Wright. Mr. Wright previously clerked for Federal (and former Orange County Superior Court) Judge James V. Selna. Following a continental breakfast, lectures, panels and presentations will begin Monday morning at 8:00 AM and conclude at 5:00 PM. Our evening on Monday will include a gala St. Patrick’s Day themed reception and dinner for conference attendees and guests. As with our inaugural event, our keynote speaker will be a jurist of interest and renown. Following a continental breakfast on Tuesday morning, our education will resume at 8:00 AM. The conference concludes at 12:00 PM. The Marriott Laguna Cliffs Resort & Spa is a AAA Four Diamond property overlooking the Southern California coastline, with expansive views from Laguna Beach to San Diego. We have negotiated a conference room rate of $179 per night, less than ½ the rack rate. This special rate will be available 3 days before and after the conference for those jurists who may wish to come early or stay longer.
