Alliance of California Judges
October 13, 2015

Alliance director and Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Tia Fisher has retired from the bench and moved out of state.  Judge Fisher played a crucial role in the Alliance’s successful efforts to put an end to CCMS and bring about an audit of the AOC.  She was a regular presence in the halls of the Capitol, working tirelessly to advance the cause of branch reform.  We will greatly miss her energy and her dedication.

Judge Fisher’s departure opened a position on our Board of Directors.  We are proud to announce that Justice Elizabeth Grimes of the Second District Court of Appeal has joined our leadership.

Justice Grimes, a graduate of the University of Texas and Stanford Law School and a former partner at Gibson, Dunn, & Crutcher, was appointed to the Los Angeles Superior Court in 1997.  She worked in dependency, criminal, and civil assignments before coming to the appellate bench in 2010.  She currently serves on the Judicial Council Advisory Committees on Civil Jury Instructions and on Civil and Small Claims, and has held a variety of leadership positions on the Court of Appeal and with the Superior Court.  Says Justice Grimes: “I have been proud of the work of the Alliance since I joined in 2009.  The present Chief Justice says she wants the Judicial Council to be transparent.  I hope the Alliance can contribute to efforts to make the Judicial Council transparent, and that the day will soon come when the Judicial Council recognizes that all of us in the judicial branch seek to improve the judicial system.”

We also welcome Judge Elizabeth Lippitt of the Los Angeles Superior Court to our Board of Directors.  Judge Lippitt, a product of Colorado College and the University of Denver Law School, is a former prosecutor who tried over 100 felonies to verdict.  Since her appointment to the bench in 1997, she has served in both criminal and civil assignments, and recently taught at the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles convention in Las Vegas.  She has been recognized for her work with Teen Court and AAJ Moot Court.

Both of our new directors bring energy, wisdom, and experience to our ongoing campaign for reform of our branch’s administration, for a more equitable retirement system, and for greater judicial independence.
