The Power of Community

Much of North Natomas was recently saddened to hear about the theft of bicycles from youths who received them through 50 Bikes for 50 Kids.

The event was held back in January and kids were nominated by community members, based upon their character and good citizenship.  Sponsorships paid for the bikes and teams of volunteers built them with the kids.  Of course, the impact of losing those bikes is discouraging and maddening.

We're pleased to share that Mayor Pro Tem Angelique Ashby rallied to have them replaced!  The North Natomas TMA held a mini-rebuild session for the students, and volunteers jumped right back in to help.  Our thanks to Aidan Connelly, Brett Rowett, and Lillian Rowett of the Heritage Park Bike Club for donating their time.

John Buchanan and Natomas Bike Shop arranged for a great deal on the cost of the bikes. The shop also sent bike mechanic Scott Meyer to oversee the bike building process and provide the final check to make sure the bikes were safe to ride.

Having something stolen is disheartening, but having a terrific community is awesome!

Spare the Air, Pay No Fare

Our valley location and summer heat can contribute to unhealthy air quality, but temps alone aren’t the only factor that triggers a Spare the Air day. Sign up for alerts and ride the Flyer for free when a Spare the Air day is announced. Did you know that Spare the Air Days occur when the Air Quality Index (AQI) is 127 or more?

Bike Valet: Local, Healthy, and Fun

Put the pedal to the parks before the sun goes down on summer! Those who utilize the Bike Valet will receive a fun bike light.

The Kids Know How to Walk (and Ride!)

If you want to see into the future, just take a look at the past. For starters, take a peek at how our future leaders did this past 2014-2015 school year in our Walk to School program in North Natomas.

  • An average of 987 students walked weekly in Walk to School programs.
  • A total of 462 students completed Project Ride Smart, a hands-on bicycle education course for elementary-aged kids.
  • Students got in the game and stepped up their foot-powered potential during Walktober and May is Bike Month, month-long campaigns that encourage active transportation.
  • Kids were able to share the foot commute, rather than going it alone, in Walking School Buses organized at six schools.

Trek It Up This September

We know you’ve been busy this summer, but don’t worry, you have not missed out on joining up with the Natomas Flyers as we embark on the annual Emigrant Trails Bike Trek, September 11-13! But before we do the real thing up in the hot springs capital, Calistoga, we’ll do a “dry” run here in town on July 25th.

Register today under our team name, Natomas Flyers. The Trek is not a race and accommodates cyclists of just about all levels. Good food, fresh air and new friends are all part of this bubbling bike adventure!

The Shuttle Bike Rack is Easy as 1, 2, 3!

We know that doing anything for the first time can be just the tiniest bit scary, so we put together a #goTOGETHER video just for you: How to Use the Bike Rack. With just a pull and a push, you can start riding your bike to work (or back) knowing you can easily get home if weather or time do not permit a round trip ride! When you’ve got your trusty steed by your side all day, it means more mobility, lunchtime excursions, and more freedom all around.

Sacramento Gateway Concerts

Sacramento is alive with the sound of free summer music at the Sacramento Gateway Concerts in The Village on the last Friday of the month this summer. Grab your friends, a blanket, refreshments and swing by for some live music and a chance to meet your community! Did we mention it’s free?

A Moonlit Ride to Change Kids' Lives

What could be better than a nighttime bike ride, under a full moon at the State Capitol with a summer night breeze to guide you? One that is for charity! The Lunar Lunacy Ride, by our friends at the Point West Rotary, is aimed at raising money for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and the foster children they help. This is one experience you don’t want to miss. Join the fun on 8/1 at 9 pm on the West Steps of the Capitol for a 5 or 15-mile course that meanders through downtown and the bike trail, all by the light of the moon!
